Remember back when I was diving into Greek Yogurt? Those were fun days. I still eat a lot of Fage and Chobani, sadly no pomegranate flavors as I have developed an allergy to it.
I found a new player in the game this week and decided to give it a try, Dannon’s Activia Greek.
Holy god, this was TERRIBLE. Awful. No good very bad yogurt. Here are my problems with it.
1. I had the strawberry, and I compared it to Fage 0% Strawberry Goji. The Activia has 70 more calories, but it is a little bit bigger. Fair enough. However, look at the sugar content in each one. 19g carbs in the Fage vs. 34g carbs in the Activia! Plus there’s more protein in the smaller Fage container.
2. All those carbs showed up in the flavor. It was so incredibly sweet, it tasted like regular yogurt.
3. It was grainy.
Stick with Fage and Chobani, or the normal Greek yogurt made by Dannon, which doesn’t suck.

I make my own yogurt, and it has been seeded by Oikos Greek yogurt and some Dannon Activa (back in February). I don’t add anything to the pot besides organic milk and some of the last batch of yogurt. It is pretty acidic, but I eat it with honey and walnuts, or use it as a replacement for sour cream. I make it extra thick by cooking it for 10 hours. I get the benefits of the 7-8 strains of bacteria, and I control what goes in it. Just heat milk to 180 F, let it cool to 110, stir in a couple Tbsp of existing yogurt, and hold at 100-110 for 4–10 hours (I put the pot in my oven with the light on).

I’ve considered trying this at some point. I’ve had Dannon’s normal activia and while it’s fine, it’s still a touch too sweet for me, though that doesn’t carry over at all into homemade yogurt. Thanks for the tip!

what do you expect from Dannon — i’m sure it’s the same from the rest of the mainstream american yogurt companies. Oikos, made by Stonyfield, is also horrible. Stick with Fage, hands-down the best, although expensive. I don’t think even Chobani, can compare –some people seem to like it (or maybe they like the price, almost always on sale and cheaper than fage anyway ). I think Chobani is thin and has an off-putting flavor (for both the plain 0% and the plain 2%).

Fage is, by far, my favorite!
